INT48International/Law/PoliticsRussia's last tsar, family members declared victims of repressionMoscow, Oct 1 RIA Novosti Russia's top court ruled Wednesday "to exonerate" the country's last tsar and members of his family, executed by the Bolsheviks in 1918, to declare them as victims of political repression. The court's appeals panel in its verdict upheld an appeal from Grand Duchess Maria, who heads the Russian imperial house in exile. The Romanovs' descendants had for years insisted that Tsar Nicholas II, his wife and their four daughters and son be classified as the victims of an unlawful state-sponsored execution. Russian prosecutors and lower courts had repeatedly turned down the appeals, saying the Romanovs had never faced any formal charges before being shot dead in a basement of a merchant's house in the Urals city of Yekaterinburg. Speaking after the court session, counsel for the imperial house, German Lukyanov said: "We wanted Russia's image to be that of a state governed by the rule of law, and Russia to demonstrate that it condemns its bloody past and has embarked on a new path of development." The remains of Nicholas II were reburied with honours in 1998 in the former imperial capital, St. Petersburg. The Russian Orthodox Church canonized him, his wife and four daughters and son two years later. --RIA Novostidkg/dg228 Words01101610

Sydney, Sept 14 ANI: Bad mothering has a worse effect on children than bad fathering, says a new study. The Australian study shows that mothers who exhibit "toxic" behaviours - from being cold and indifferent to being abusive, manipulative or over-controlling - are far more likely to warp their children's outlook on life than fathers with similar behaviour."Mothers have a really powerful effect on the way their kids view the world and themselves, probably because kids spend more time with their mothers, especially in the crucial early years," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Wayne Warburton, a research fellow at Macquarie University's Children and Families Research Centre, as saying. To reach the conclusion, the expert asked 441 university students to fill out detailed questionnaires on the parenting styles of their mothers and fathers, and on their own patterns of thinking. He asked them to recall 72 parenting behaviours, including "making a child feel ashamed", being unloving or rejecting, and frequently telling the child they were stupid or would fail. He also asked questions designed to uncover destructive thinking patterns in the students, such as being "clingy" out of a fear of being abandoned. The expert found that young adults were two-thirds as likely to develop unhelpful patterns of thinking if the toxic parenting they had experienced came from their father rather than their mother. If a range of poor parenting behaviours existed, they tended to be found in the same parent, the study found.Just over 22 per cent of the mothers and 14 per cent of the fathers were classified as toxic. 2008-09-14 04:22:12Polar bears declare war on Sarah Palin!
London, September 14 ANI: Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's environmental credentials have been attacked in an online computer game called PolarPalin.Players of the game have to help a polar bear navigate its way across Alaska to blow up oil wells, all the while avoiding the State's Governor Palin. The game features Palin in her campaign tank. "This game is funny, but it has a very serious message," the Telegraph quoted said Sadia Chishti, managing director of T-Enterprise, the Scottish company behind the game, as saying. "The US recently classified the Alaskan polar bear as a threatened species. It is predicted that the population of bears could be reduced by two-thirds by the year 2050. "Yet the state of Alaska, led by Sarah Palin, is going to sue the government to reverse the decision. They are worried it will hold back oil and gas developments," she added. Those playing the game, available at www.t-enterprise.co.uk/polarpalin, are urged to "help the polar bears fight back by using dynamite to blow up the oil wells". "We believe Mrs Palin's views show an appalling lack of judgement from someone who wants to be the second most powerful person on the planet, and we believe more people should be talking about it," said Sadia. Palin has courted controversy with her stance on the environment by questioning the causes of climate change in a recent interview. Time magazine also reports that she has in the past opposed increased protection for beluga whales in the waters around Alaska, and has supported gas pipelines and drilling initiatives in the region.
