PROBLEM OF SPEAKER
According to media-reports, office of Lok Sabha Speaker is flooded with communications from members of public expressing concern on behaviour of Parliamentarians in Lok Sabha, where Shri Somnath Chaterjee is said to have expressed his helplessness on the aspect because his efforts to seek punitive action did not get support from political leadership. Even otherwise, punishment by Parliamentary committees is very mild like just barring for few sittings of the House for an erring Parliamentarian proved guilty for impersonation a girl-friend as wife while on foreign tour compounding with further offence of giving false evidence on the issue. Punishment for Parliamentarians should be more than for commoners which should include abolition of immunity to Parliamentarians from normal law of land even for their irresponsible behaviour in the House. Was it proper that JMM parliamentarians in infamous bribery-episode were acquitted only because their bribed act to vote for Narsimharao government was immunised being part of Parliamentary proceedings!
